The VSU campaigns:
Dear Amanda
For many years, SMA joined with Student Unions to campaign against VSU.
According to a report from UNSW's Vice Chancellor, our "
Dear Amanda" postcards were being sent in huge numbers to then education minister, Amanada Vanstone. When the UNSW VC presented one to her at a lunch, she was reported to have said "not
another one of those things".
SMA donated the printing and distribution of over 120,000 of them pre-addressed to the minister's parliamentary office.
The
Dear Amanda postcards were a powerful method for getting the minister to hear the voice of thousands of students who valued student union services.
In the short term, this round of the campaign was won. Sadly a few years later, ideology and numbers in the Senate prevailed.
USU member campaign
Prior to the VSU introduction, SMA was part of
Sydney University Union's pre-emptive strategy to better communicate
to members just how many critical services the union provides.
In semester 2, 2005 SMA rolled out the "
I heart USU" campaign. This involved lot's of one-to-one conversations with members, explaining what services were provided by
their Union. See the photos below;

The impact of VSU can be reduced by building support for the Union one student at a time.
